Your Diabetic Dog - Can Canine Diabetes Be Managed With Natural Remedies For Dogs?

!±8± Your Diabetic Dog - Can Canine Diabetes Be Managed With Natural Remedies For Dogs?

It seems like every time you turn around, you hear something about herbs for dogs or natural remedies for dogs. If you have a diabetic dog, you're probably wondering if there's a natural way to treat diabetes in dogs. Is insulin the only answer? Read on to learn more.

Diet For A Diabetic Dog

Obviously, you need to cut out any food that's high in sugar. But that's not as easy as it sounds, as sugar isn't the only problem. Did you know that most dry dog foods, including the prescription diets your vet sells, are made mostly from grains?

What's wrong with that? The problem with grains is that they've very high in carbohydrates, which your pet's body breaks down quickly into glucose. This glucose is absorbed into the bloodstream all at once, cause a spike in blood sugar levels.

Proteins and fats are also broken down into glucose, but the digestion process takes longer. This means that glucose is released into the blood over a longer period of time, which helps to regulate blood glucose levels. This is why you'll want to switch your dog over to either a high-quality canned food, or start feeding her a homemade diet.

What About Exercise?

Exercise is a great natural way to regulate glucose levels in the blood. However, you need to be careful when exercising a diabetic pet, as hypoglycemia can result if the exercise is too vigorous.

Talk to your vet about setting up an exercise program for your pet with canine diabetes. He or she will tell you that consistency is the key:
Exercise your pet at the same time every day. Keep the exercise sessions the same length every day. Start out slowly if you've both been couch potatoes. Avoid vigorous exercise that gets your pet out of breath. Walking and swimming are recommended. If your pet starts getting dizzy or weak, she could be going into hypoglycemia. Always have a little Karo syrup with you so you can rub it on her gums. Take her to the vet right away if this happens.
Can Natural Remedies For Dogs Be Helpful?

Studies have shown that many herbs can be helpful in regulating blood glucose levels in a diabetic dog.
Fenugreek helps to slow down carbohydrate absorption, and may stimulate insulin production. Astragalus is an old stand-by in Chinese traditional medicine. Research has proven its effectiveness in regulating glucose levels. It can also prevent or slow the formation of cataracts, which are common in canines with diabetes, as well as boosting your pet's immune system. Goat's rue can lower glucose levels without causing hypoglycemia. It's another herb that may reduce your pet's risk of cataracts, and may also prevent kidney damage. Bilberry is thought to prevent cataracts, and many herbalists believe this herb can even help to reverse them.

The mineral chromium is also essential for regulating the amount of glucose in the blood. It can also prevent insulin resistance, which is usually a precursor of type 2 diabetes. This is the most common form of this disease among canines.

You may be interested in trying a remedy that contains all these ingredients. They're safe to use along with the insulin you give your pet. In fact, many pet owners have been able to reduce their pet's dependence on insulin by using herbal pet remedies. Always talk to your vet before making any changes to your pet's treatment plan.

You'll want to learn more about how natural remedies for dogs may help treat canine diabetes. This may be an effective way to manage this disease in your pet.

Fabulous and Fun Science Projects

!±8± Fabulous and Fun Science Projects

Fun science projects are the heart's desire of every elementary and middle school student headed to the science fair. To most kids, a science project simply has to be fun. Frankly, most teachers share this view. From a teacher's standpoint, it's much better for a student if he or she is interested in the topic being studied.

Of course, a fun science project isn't the final goal. The purpose of a science project is to teach the child about science. To do that, teachers and science fair administrators usually have strict guidelines about what a project or experiment must include. Experiments must usually follow the scientific method. Demonstrations must explain a scientific principle. All projects must include research and references.

But a science project is also supposed to whet a child's appetite for science. A fun and interesting project will make a student want to learn even more about our fascinating world and the scientific laws that govern it. And a fun science project is a great way to do just that.

Here is a list of idea for science projects that will expand a child's science knowledge and experience, but also meet that number one kid requirement - of fun.

1. Show how yeast gives off gas. Put yeast in a bottle of warm water, top it a balloon, and watch the balloon fill up with gas. This project can be done as a demonstration in front of the class, or as an fun science experiment.

2. What can you do to speed up a chemical reaction? Plop Alka Seltzer into a cup of water and time it. Then crush the Alka Seltzer, and watch it fizz even faster after you put it into a cup of water. Still another time, reduce the amount of water, add Alka Selter, and see how fast it dissolves. This is a demonstration science project, and is terrific to wow classmates.

3. Explore the concept of density. Pour water, Karo syrup, rubbing alcohol, and vegetable oil into a tall container. Watch how they layer. Then drop in different items, like a penny, a cork, a Lego or a candle, and see where they float - or sink. The concept of density is advanced enough for middle schoolers, but can still be understood by kindergartners.

4. Show how a chicken egg is a cell with a selectively permeable membrane. Soak a raw egg in vinegar for a weekend. The shell will come off. Then put the egg into dark syrup and watch what happens! This is another fun science project that can be done as an investigation or a demonstration.

5. Find out about static cling. Rub a sheet of plexiglass with a wool sock, then show how balloons and hair stick to it. Or, try make a ball of aluminum foil dance, as shown in this You-Tube video.

Detailed instructions for these projects are available at http://www.24hourscienceprojects.com. You'll also find all sorts of reference materials to help with the science involved. We'll definitely be able to steer you in the right direction as you search for fun science projects.

3 Delicious Homemade Bun Recipes

!±8± 3 Delicious Homemade Bun Recipes

During the weekends I love to get into my kitchen and do some baking and one of the things I enjoy baking are a variety of homemade buns. Two of the following recipes utilize frozen bread dough that you can purchase from your local supermarket. The third recipe uses homemade dough that you make yourself.

Here are 3 of our favorite homemade bun recipes.

Cinnamon Walnut Buns Recipe

2 loaves of frozen bread dough

1 cup dark Karo syrup

1 cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons cold milk

1 stick of butter, softened

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 cup walnuts, chopped

Remove the frozen bread dough from freezer and thaw according to package directions. In a large saucepan combine the Karo syrup, brown sugar, milk, butter and ground cinnamon over medium heat until it's nice and hot but not boiling. Remove from heat and stir in the chopped walnuts. Pull off small pieces of the dough from the loaf and place into a baking pan. Cover pan and let dough rise for 1 hour. Pour the sauce over the dough and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes.

Homemade Apple Buns Recipe

Dough:

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons butter, softened

2 teaspoons baking powder

3/4 cup cold milk

3 cups freshly chopped apples

1/2 teaspoon salt

ground cinnamon

Syrup:

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 cup water

1 tablespoon butter, softened

Mix dough ingredients in the order given until well combined. Roll dough out onto a floured surface until it is 1/2" thick. Spread the chopped apple pieces on top and sprinkle with the ground cinnamon. Roll the dough up and then cut into rolled bun shapes. Place into a baking pan. Mix up the ingredients for the syrup in a saucepan over medium heat until it has all been dissolved and then pour syrup mixture over the buns. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 40 minutes.

Homemade Sticky Buns Recipe

2 loaves frozen bread

1 box vanilla pudding (not instant)

2 cups brown sugar

1 stick butter, softened

In a saucepan combine together the brown sugar, butter, ground cinnamon and the pudding mix. Heat until hot but not boiling. Remove from stove and pour sauce over the dough.
